Empowering Smart Cities with Multimodal Extreme-Scale Data Analytics (MARVEL Project)
A MARVEL Workshop at the EBDVF 2023
This workshop, organised by the EU-funded MARVEL project, holds a pivotal role as part of the project’s final event. It aims to unveil the accomplishments of the MARVEL project achieved after three years of continuous development. The goal is to showcase the MARVEL framework through ten real-life use cases in the smart cities of Trento, Malta, and Novi Sad demonstrating their significant impact on the evolution of future smart cities. The MARVEL use cases tackle critical challenges including city monitoring, road traffic management, crowd monitoring, and security.
The MARVEL project’s final event will showcase its mission, objectives, and accomplishments. Attendees will explore the groundbreaking exploits, innovative solutions, and potential impact of MARVEL on smart cities. The event will also cover noteworthy scientific and technical achievements, offer a live platform demonstration, and feature smart city test cases in Malta and Trento. The event concludes with an interactive Q&A session with project experts.
The MARVEL final event is organised under EBDVF 2023, the flagship event of the European Big Data Value and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community.

Prof. Sotiris Ioannidis
MARVEL Project Coordinator, FORTH
Prof. Sotiris Ioannidis (M) received a BSc degree in Mathematics and an MSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Crete in 1994 and 1996 respectively. In 1998 he received an MSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Rochester and in 2005 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Ioannidis held a Research Scholar position at the Stevens Institute of Technology until 2007 and a Research Director at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) until 2020. He is currently Associate Professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Technical University of Crete (TUC) and Director of the Microprocessor and Hardware Laboratory.
He was a Member of the ENISA Advisory Group (AG) from 2017 to 2020, and is a Member of the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET) Advisory Committee (AC). He is also Chairman of the Committee of Ethics and Deontology of Research of FORTH and Member of the Advisory Committee for National Infrastructures for Research and Technology. His research interests are in the area of systems and network security, security policy, privacy, and high-speed networks. Ioannidis has authored more than 200 publications in international conferences and journals, as well as book chapters, and has both chaired and served on numerous program committees in prestigious conferences, such as ACM CCS and IEEE S&P. Ioannidis is a Marie-Curie Fellow and has participated in numerous international and European projects. He has been the PI of 40 European, National and DARPA projects, attracting in excess of 12 million euros for his organization, and has been Project Coordinator in 14 of them. Currently, Prof. Ioannidis is the Deputy Coordinator of CONCORDIA one of the four EU Cybersecurity Pilots.
Vivian Kiousi
Senior Business Innovation Manager, Intrasoft
Mrs Akrivi Vivian Kiousi is a Senior Innovation Manager of the Research and Innovation Development Department of the company. For more than twenty years in research, Mrs. Kiousi has gained experience in the field of Big Data, Transport, Telecommunications, Health, e-Government, Human Computer Interaction, Internet based Technologies, Community Portals, Promotion and Dissemination Strategies. Mrs. Kiousi was and is currently involved in several relevant European and R&D Projects in various positions including Project Coordination, Project Management, Dissemination and Communications management. Notable examples are: H2020 Iliad, CIVITAS WIKI -Support action to CIVITAS initiative (Communication Manager), H2020 MaaS4EU (Project Manager), H2020 Trustonomy (T. Manager) Hi-Reach 2020 (Communication Manager), OPTIMUM H2020 (Project Manager), Transforming Transport H2020 Lighthouse project (Impact Manager), Trace H2020 (Project Manager), MARVEL H2020 (Exploitation Manager) etc. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Wolverhampton on policy and economical challenges related to the adoption of mobility as a service (MaaS) transportation schemes. She holds two masters (MSc), one in Cognitive Science and AI and the second in Telecommunications Computing and Human Centered Systems awarded by the school of Computing and the Electronic and Electrical School of Engineering respectively at the University of Birmingham. In addition Mrs. Kiousi has been trained in several management, communication methodologies and social media strategies and she is CMMI-DEV 1.3 ML3 Appraisal Team Member and ATM.
Dr. Nikola Simić
Research And Teaching Assistant At Faculty Of Technical Sciences, University Of Novi Sad
Nikola Simić is a teaching assistant and researcher at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia. He is a researcher at the EU-funded MARVEL (GA#957337) project and before that he was involved in several European and National projects in the areas of artificial intelligence and signal processing. He holds a PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computing from the University of Niš, Republic of Serbia. His research interests include quantization theory and its application to various signal processing areas, such as image and speech signal processing. The research interests also include estimation and prediction theory, transform coding, pattern recognition, and machine learning.
Tassos Kanellos
MARVEL Integration Manager, ITML
Tassos Kanellos is a Technical Project Manager at ITML. During 2012-2021, he worked at NCSR ‘Demokritos’ as a lead Unity Developer and as a senior Project Manager in R&D projects. Previously, he has worked as a freelance architect, computational designer and 3D visualization artist, as a ‘Design Systems Analyst’ at ‘Foster+Partners’ and has collaborated with the ‘United Visual Artists’. He has taught computational design with Processing and Arduino at multiple workshops. During 2012-2019, he taught the course ‘Computational Creativity’ at a joint Postgraduate Programme of ASFA and Paris8. He holds a Diploma in Architecture (NTUA) and an MSc in Computation (UCL).
Prof. Adrian Muscat
Chief Of R&D, Greenroads
Adrian Muscat holds the position of Professor at the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering, and Chief of Research and Development at Greenroads Ltd, TAKEOFF, University of Malta. He received the Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Queen Mary University of London in 2002, the M.Sc. Degree in RF and Microwave Engineering from the University of Bradford in 1996, and the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta, 1993. His current research interests are in machine learning, computer vision and image understanding and their application in automation, robotics, assisted living and video analytics.
Stella Markopoulou
Senior Software Engineer, ZELUS
Stella Markopoulou received her diploma and MSc in Computer Engineering and Informatics Department at the Polytechnic University of Patras. Her current work includes Advanced Visualization techniques and development of multi-purpose user interfaces. She has been involved in EU funded projects using her knowledge in software development. Her research interests include advanced visualizations and management of digital evidence in the field of digital forensics.
Thomas Festi
Project Manager Of "Smart City" Project Of The Municipality Of Trento
Tomas Festi is a Project manager of the MARVEL and PROTECTOR projects for the Municipality of Trento, in the past, he managed courses of the European Social Fund and research projects in the training field funded by the European Commission for the Employment Agency of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Previously he gained experience in the management of development projects in the context of International Cooperation.
Despina Kopanaki
Project Manager At FORTH
Despina Kopanaki is a project manager at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) and at the Technical University of Crete (TUC). She has participated in the project coordination of I-BiDaaS (GA#780787), MARVEL (GA#957337), and SecOPERA (GA #101070599) EU-funded projects. Before that, she was involved in more than 20 European and National projects in the area of mobility, data mining, privacy, big data, and data analytics as a researcher, project manager, and financial manager. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics and an MSc in Applied Economics and finance from Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), Greece.
